Another win for the U9s

Thornton Watlass U9s 286 for 4 (266 net) vs Richmondshire U9s 315 for 3 (300 net)

The sun beat down on the idyllic North Yorkshire village of Thornton Watlass, welcoming our unbeaten U9s to play their 6th game of the season.

Losing the toss, Richmondshire were asked to field first and chase a total - something they have become accustomed to in recent games.  Due to an abundance of Watlass players, we were asked to play 10-a-side for this game, something that isn't a problem for our well-developed squad.  Another player was given an opportunity of playing for the club - the 15th this season - 7 year old Archie MacLelland donned the famous Richmondshire shirt.

Max Percival opened the bowling and promptly bowled their opener, according to his teammates, his 'lucky sunglasses' had something to do with it.  His bowling was its usual blend of accuracy and pace.  MacLelland, Humphris and Player all bowled well before their first batting pair departed, having moved the score onto 220.  The next batting pair arrived and made tracks, hardly troubling the scorers.  However, Richmondshire really started to turn the screw during the next phase of the innings.

Jack Platt struck with a lovely delivery that simply popped to short mid-wicket and was grasped firmly by the debutant MacLelland.  In the very next over Issac Bottomley took his 5th wicket of the season with a short pitched ball that nipped in off the seam and took off the bails via the batsman's inside edge - much to his dismay.  Percival then took another wicket (with the help of Jack Platt's catching) to put the Watlass innings into dismay and leaving him with the excellent figures of 2 overs, 1 maiden, 2 wickets for 1 run.

Although the opposition rallied a little in the final overs and the number of wides we bowled was unusually high, they finished on a modest 286 for 4 (net 266).

Buoyed by a competent fielding performance, Richmondshire began to bat - Eddie Player and James Cox opening the innings.  Both batted well against a strong initial attack, and a score of 209 after the first 4 overs set us on our way.  Bottomley and MacLelland continued the innings with sensible shots and although the former suffered from an excellent delivery that removed his bails, he responded with 3 belting boundaries that made his bat look more like Thor's hammer than one of Kookaburra's finest.

Then came an excellent partnership from the two female members of the team.  Forbes and Humphris ran 11 very sensible and quick singles that moved the score sharply up to 250+.  Percival and Bromirskyj batted 4th to continue the innings and moved us past the Watlass total, never looking like they were going to lose a wicket and always placing the ball around the ground and taking singles when they could.

This allowed Jack Platt and and Joseph White to complete the victory and add another 33 runs to our total during their spell at the crease.  White hitting 16 runs, including another 2 boundaries and finishing our innings on a nice round 300 net score.

The highlight of this performance was the development in our running - 35 singles were taken during our batting - a huge improvement from previous games.  Well done everyone!
