U15 Match Report - Merryweather overcomes hot Winter on a cold spring morning

Every junior match I have been involved with against Barnard Castle teams has been highly competitive and played in a good spirit, this one was no different, though this was probably the one played in the coldest temperature. The wicket, however, was excellent, being the one used for the first XI match the previous day.

The star performances were by the two captains, Sam Winter and Tom Merryweather, who both scored unbeaten fifties and bowled with skill.

We were put into bat and Sam scored fluently opening the batting, hitting nine fours before he retired in the twelfth over. Slow bowler C Pearson then put the brakes on our scoring rate and picked up three wickets as our batters tried to hit him across the line and failed. Some enthusiastic running of extras by our lower order resulted in a final score of 98 for 8.

In the Barney innings Tom Merryweather scored his fifty batting at number three. We had held Toby back to third change in the hope that his pace would be too much for the Barney middle order, but he took only the one wicket as Merryweather manipulated the strike, bowling the Barney number five with a peach of a delivery that hit the top of off stump. When their captain retired, Barney needed another seventeen runs off four overs, wickets were falling, they then needed six off the final over. Some frantic running of an overthrow left their number nine needing a single off the last ball, which was achieved with an inside edge to fine leg. A slightly less spectacular ending to our last U15 match at Barney, which was decided with a huge six into the cattle market off the penultimate ball, but another exciting game of cricket which could have gone either way.

In the field both Johnnies bowled very well, praise is also due for the catches taken by Toby and Rosie.
