U11 Match Report v Darlington U11

A fantastic game of junior cricket ended in a very close, tense finish at Gilling.

Richmond won the toss and Johnny Carr having looked at the damp pitch decided to bowl first.  It was not their best bowling performance of the season and in total they gave away 34 runs from wides and no balls.  Darlington did not look like losing a wicket for a long period of their innings and were digging in until in the ninth over Toby Newton bowled one of the Darlington players.  This was followed up with a very tight last four overs against two good batsmen and during this Johnny Carr took a fantastic low catch to secure a second wicket for Richmond.  Jordan Forbes was also unlucky not to get a run out after a direct throw hit the stumps in the last over.  Pick of the bowlers was Jonathan Carlton with one wicket for six runs in his three overs.  Darlington scored a net total of 248 runs.

When Richmond batted they again had an early run out which made the run chase a bit harder.  In the second pair Johnny Carr batted well hitting two great boundaries and ended up with 11 runs to his name.  When the last pair, James Kelly and George Spink, went in Richmond required 15 runs to win.  They made decent progress in the first two overs and got 5 runs, leaving 10 to win from 2 overs.  Unfortunately George Spink was then bowled off the first ball of the second last over and the eight run penalty took the required runs up to 18 from 11 balls.  James and George both each then hit boundaries and a single meaning the last over arrived with 8 required.  George hit the first ball for four and after sensible batting resulted in three further singles the game was tied with one ball to go.  James Kelly was on strike and played and missed at a ball down his legs but the wicketkeeper failed to take it cleanly and George was able to scramble through for a bye to give Richmond the victory.

Great game of junior cricket and credit to the boys for keeping going till the end and achieving their narrow victory against a strong Darlington team.
