SPL: Daredevils vs Warriors match report

Umpires: Andy Barlow and Michael Gauntlett

The first match of this year's SPL was played in damp conditions, reducing the match to 10 overs per side.

In the end it was a closely-fought contest, coming down to the last over with the Warriors needing to take a couple of wickets to beat the Daredevils.

The Daredevils held out to win by 9 runs: Warriors 219-6 (man-of-the-match Brandon taking three wickets in an over); Daredevils 228-2.

Despite the weather both teams remained enthusiastic throughout - the term "herding cats" comes to mind, but there's clearly a lot we need to work on in terms of technique and application.

We've identified the following areas for the coaches to look at:

Batting: basic grip and stance, backing up and running between wickets, defending the good ball
Bowling: legal bowling action (not throwing), getting the ball to bounce nearer the batsmen than the bowler
Fielding: safety (8 metres from bat, pay attention and watch the ball at all times), field positions, backing up
Captaincy: work out batting and bowling order in advance, team discipline

Hopefully we'll see the children develop through the season, but the main objective at this age is that the children enjoy the game and make friends.

Based on last night's experience, we plan to

  1. play 10 overs per side regardless of weather, to keep the game to a couple of hours
  2. play with a Kwik Cricket ball rather than an Incrediball; this will remove the need for batsmen to wear protective equipment, which caused much delay and amusement with long pads on short legs

Finally, thank you to Michael Gauntlett, our Darlington and District League umpire, for umpiring and to parents for helping to score and look after the batting teams.
