U13 Cup Semi-final v Raby Castle 5th September

With U13 player availability affected by injuries and the start of the football and rugby seasons, a team made up of both U13 and U11 players took the field at Raby Castle for what was expected to be a difficult fixture, Raby having won the league fixture easily.

Richmondshire batted first, Peter While partnering Owen Kelly in the first pair. Captain for the day Peter was under instructions to give as much of the strike as possible to Owen, he did this perfectly, scoring a single off the only ball he faced whilst Owen stroked an elegant 18 not out. Next in were Kieran Doshi and Alex Rowe. Alex played the steady role as Kieran mixed some classy strokes with a few heaves and the usual frenetic running to score 22 runs, the pair added 27 for the loss of 3 wickets. Third pair Dominic Clarke and Finnis Barlow accumulated steadily, adding 13 for the loss of one wicket. Last in were Joe Shields and Angus Barlow, who were both undefeated, Joe scoring 13 runs and Angus 16. At the end of 16 overs, Richmondshire were 90 for 4 wickets, 270 net.

Raby Castle came out to bat and faced some accurate bowling backed up by excellent field placing and fielding. A run was snicked behind in the first over, after that no more runs were scored off the bat in the next seven overs whilst 5 wickets fell, so that halfway through their innings, Raby were 3 for 5 and effectively out of the running, with every Richmondshire player having contributed, as Peter had given every bowler a bowl and Finnis had taken a neat stumping. Raby's third pair tried to accelerate but did so ineffectively as Richmondshire kept the fielders in and the pressure high, Joe Shields taking a fantastic diving catch at short mid-wicket, stopping an otherwise certain four and turning it into minus five. The last Raby pair came to the wicket with the score at 20 for 8, needing to score a minimum of 90 runs to win the match. They managed to score 26 for 2 wickets, leaving the final score 46 for 10, 196 net.

So, an unexpectedly easy victory by 74 runs, down to accurate bowling and disciplined fielding. Raby only got runs off the bat from 16 balls and there were only 8 extras. Evidence that these boys have learned plenty about the game of cricket this season, now there's another fixture to fit in, in the form of a final against Rockliffe !
