U11 Festival 18th July

The latter stages of today's U11 festival saw some thrilling cricket as Richmondshire demonstrated their strength in depth at this age group, with two teams making it to the semi-finals, where they met.

The Richmondshire Superkings had a relatively easy path to the semi-finals, with a 58 run victory over Middleham followed by a 74 run thrashing of Darlington's second string. In these matches, Jordan Moss managed to score 30 not out in a 2 over innings and Joe Shields took three wickets in one over.

The Richmondshire Challengers had a much trickier path; their loss to Darlington A meant that they had to get through a tricky bowl-off against Scorton to book their semi-final place against the Superkings.

The Challengers batted first, making 64 for 4 wickets in their 12 overs, to give a net score of 244, with Olly Carr, Nathan Hislop, James Irving and Ted While all making significant contributions. With their powerful hitters, the more experienced Superkings were expected to knock the runs off easily, but that wasn't what happened. Joe Shields was brilliantly caught by Nathan Hislop, Jordan Moss was out twice, the wickets falling to Ted While and Nathan Hislop, so when the final pair of Lewis Cocks and Toby Lush came in, their team were 51 for 4, still 13 runs behind the Challengers score. The atmosphere was tense as Toby and Lewis accumulated steadily, not passing the target until the end of the penultimate over, before carefully playing out the last over to secure a tight victory.

The Superkings were then back out on the pitch, supported from the side by the Challengers, for the final against Darlington A. Tight bowling by the Superkings kept Darlo's score down to 35 for 3 when their last pair came to the wicket. Four overs later they left with the score 85 for 5, having hit out hard to give a net 260, which was expected to be a tough target, as Darlo's bowling was reported to be their strength. The Superkings got off to the worst possible start, losing three wickets in the first pairing, making the target that bit harder to achieve. Sam Winter then scored a very sensible 18 not out, bringing the target that bit closer for when the big hitting Jordan Moss arrived at the wicket. Jordan then set about the bowling with some serious aggression, scoring 25 not out, aided by Andrew Gordon who worked very well to keep him on strike by running quick singles and extras. There was still plenty to be done when the final pair of Lewis Cocks and Toby Lush came to the middle; the pairing batted sensibly, despite which Toby was brilliantly caught and bowled, leaving the Superkings behind the Darlo score at the start of the last over, with Lewis on strike. The first two balls were carefully defended, before Lewis seized upon a leg side delivery and clipped it to the boundary to put Richmond ahead. There then followed another four, a dot ball, and once the victory was secured, Lewis took a big heave (and a miss) at the last ball before the jubilant home supporters ran onto the pitch to celebrate a hard earned victory.
