You may have read that helmets to the latest standard are going to be mandatory in professional crickets. In recreational junior cricket, helmets will continue to be mandatory but do not have to be to the latest standard.
However, if buying a new helmet, it is worth buying one to the latest standard, which is the 2013 version of BS7928. This does not mean buying an expensive helmet, the main difference in the new ones seems to be that you cannot adjust the gap between the grille and the peak.
