Third trophy of the season for U15s
NYACC League North Division v South Division play-off
Saltburn 85 for 7 off 20 overs, Richmondshire 86 for 4 off 15.2 overs.
As you can tell from the picture, conditions in Saltburn this morning were ideal for cricket. With a 9.30 start, dew can be an issue at the beginning or end of the season, but there was none of that. This was a play-off to decide the overall North Yorkshire Area Cricket Council champions, with Richmondshire and Saltburn both having won their respective divisions with unbeaten records.
Saltburn batted first, we opened the bowling with our trusted pairing of the two Jonnys Carlton and Carr. Jonny Carlton took a key wicket early on with Olly Tennant caught behind for only four, he was allegedly the star of their batting line-up, having already scored a fifty for their first XI. When the Jonnys ended their spells, Saltburn were only 25 for 1 after 8 overs, first change Mark Walker then bowled the Saltburn number 3 with his first ball. Saltburn did lift the scoring rate a little between overs 10 and 15, with one wicket falling to Harvey Websdale during this part of the innings. Any attempts by Saltburn to further accelerate the scoring rate were then thwarted by an excellent spell of death bowling from Matthew Price, who took 4 wickets for 9 runs, 3 bowled, one caught and bowled, as Saltburn limped to 85 for 7.
Scoring at just over 4 runs an over was never going to be an issue for our batting line-up. The only way we could have lost from this position was if we were bowled out. We did lose Sam after a quick 14 and Matthew caught at mid-wicket to be 28 for 2 after 6 overs, but free swinging of the bat from George (13), Gary (16) and Tom Spensley (28* including a square driven six), took us to level with the Saltburn score after 15 overs. Harvey's presence at the crease then induced Saltburn's sixth bowler to serve up a wide and that was it.
Many of our matches this season have been won by batting first and getting such a big total that the opposition were batted out of the game, we have also defended lower totals with tight performances in the field. The umpires commented afterwards that we won this match by the pressure put on by our opening bowlers; I note Jonny Carlton bowled 19 dot balls and Jonny Carr 17 dot balls.
