Richmond U11 v Darlington U11 Match Report

Wed 24th April game played at Darlington CC

Richmond CC U11 team started their 2013 cup campaign with a tough away game at Feethams against the team who beat the Under 11s in the Cup final last season, Darlington CC.

Darlington won the toss and chose to bat.

Richmond had a number of players making their debut in hard ball cricket and coped really well throughout the Darlington innings.  Jordan Forbes started with his normal tight bowling and this was backed up with lots of keen fielding particularly from James Norman and Oliver Cocksedge.  The first two pairs for Darlington batted steadily and at the half stage they had 30 runs on the board with no wickets down.  During the third pairs innings Richmond took their first wicket of the season when James Norman bowled their number 6 batsman.  Darlington left their strongest batting pair till last and they did manage to find the boundary on 3 occasions.  However they were also run out after a great piece of fielding by Ryan Goldsmith allowed Tom Dowson to break the stumps with the batsman well short.  Darlington finished on 263 runs with 2 wickets giving a final net score of 247 runs.  Special mention should go to Sam Potter and Oliver Cocksedge who bowled really well on their debuts.  The only thing that was slightly disappointing was the number of wides Richmond bowled, giving Darlington 28 runs in total, something to work on in training.

When Richmond went out to bat Jordan Forbes and James Norman got them off to a great start with a number of great shots and contributed 25 runs without any wickets.  Jordan also got the first 6 of the season, albeit courtesy of a run 2 and 4 overthrows.  Ryan Goldsmith and Oliver Cocksedge carried on the good work and although a first wicket was lost Richmond reached the half way point still well in touch with Darlingtons total.  The next pair Tom Dowson and Sam Potter were next to the crease and Tom protected his younger partner to such an extent that Sam faced only 1 ball of the 4 overs.  They scored consistently throughout the four overs but did again lose a wicket.  So when the last pair, James Kelly and Uchenna Anyadiegwu, went in the net score was 235 runs and 13 runs were needed for victory.  James took the majority of the strike, but was well supported by Uchenna, and although Darlington's top bowlers were operating he managed to find the boundary twice and with a few byes going past the Darlington wicketkeeper Richmond were ahead going into the last over.  James played out a maiden over and Richmond had won by a margin of 7 runs.

Another really tight game against Darlington and a fantastic effort to come away with a win.  The experienced guys from last season (Ryan, Tom, Jordan, James and James) were really well supported by the new kids (Uchenna, Oliver and Sam).  Well done to all, great start to the season.
