An excellent performance from a scratch team, brought together at less than 24 hours notice. Peter While, who captained the side very sensibly throughout, made the first key decision when he won the toss and put Scorton into bat.

Toby Lush and Ted While both took wickets in their first overs, aided by excellent fielding. Rebecca Ramalingam calmly gathered in a skied shot at mid on, Adam Heseltine threw down the stumps from mid-off for a run out and shortly followed this with a fine catch from a firmly struck shot. With tight bowling and fielding wickets continued to fall steadily, without too many runs going on the board.

Adam bowled well, conceding very few runs and taking a super caught and bowled. Ted after a relatively expensive over pleaded with brother Peter for a change of ends. When this was granted he responded with wickets from his first two balls. Jack Giddins and Rebecca bowled economical overs and although Scorton had saved their best batsmen for the later pairs they were still finding runs hard to come by. Will Sydall did manage to start scoring from anything straying down leg side but Matthew Ramalingam came on to stem the flow at just the right time.

The Richmondshire innings started with confidence high but the opening partnership of Toby and Adam, despite orders to the contrary, decided to try some suicide running. Having got away with the first, Toby went for a repeat only to be run out by a good throw. This brought them to their senses and they then batted more carefully, although Toby was still keen to a make a big hit into the fair rides.

The second pair, Rebecca and Matthew, batted sensibly to put us in a strong position. Lewis Cox after a patient start, began to strike the ball well and Peter unselfishly gave him as much of the bowling as possible. James Irving and Ted then played good shots and ran well, adding singles to the score without taking any undue risks.

As we were playing nine a side, the final four overs paired our ninth man Jack with a batsmen of our choice, who was Lewis. With an almost unassailable lead they took no risks, while punishing any loose bowling.

A convincing win against a Scorton team largely the same as that which a few weeks ago had given our first choice eight a very close game in the cup. Well done to all the players and a big thank you to the parents who rallied round to get their children to the game at short notice.

Mike Heseltine
